“Love is nothing other than finding the truth.”
“Love is nothing other than finding the truth.”
The brain responds to symbols or metaphors more powerfully than anything else.
– Tony Robbins
The senses are your real foes. They draw you out, and disturb your peace of mind. Do not keep company with them. Subdue them. Restrain them. Curb them, just as you would curb your enemies on the battlefield. This is not the work of a day. It wants patient and protracted sadhana (practice) for a very long time. Control of the senses is really control of the mind.
Pascal’s wisdom: “All man’s miseries derive from not being able to sit in a quiet room alone.”
“How wild it was, to let it be.”
—Cheryl Strayed, Wild
“She wasn’t doing a thing that I could see, except standing there leaning on the balcony railing, holding the universe together.”
—J. D. Salinger, “A Girl I Knew”
The whole universe is a single organism, and therefore every thought is connected with every object. There is a chance, therefore, of everyone enjoying everything in the world. Anyone can enjoy anything inasmuch as every thought is connected with every object in the world inwardly, though outwardly there are all isolated, cut off from one another. Here is a great secret for us, a great scientific fact that comes before out mind for daily implementation in our life. Whatever you think can be manifest and possessed. This is a great psychological and scientific truth. Whatever you deeply think, that will materialise. This is the principle applied in meditation also.
Question: How can I fully abide in the Self?
Papaji: The Self is the abode of everything and you are already abiding in Self. You are always in Self and yet you forget and think that you have to do some practice. But you don’t need any practice. That Self which you attain by practice is not the real Self. Self is present everywhere always and is unattainable. How can you separate from it? Where are you that you could possibly be out of Self?
These kind of doubts appear only to those who have not yet had experience. You will know that you have been the Self itself all the time. Now you don’t see this because you have been busy elsewhere, seeking elsewhere some object, so you could not have the experience. Don’t look for any practice to take you to the Self because Self is always Here and Now. Where can you go and leave the Self?
Find out who you are. Everyday we deal with this question here in Satsang. You must find out for yourself Who You Are! Solve this question for yourself or it is all just intellectual understanding. You don’t need intellect or mind to understand this. Simply keep Quiet for one moment. Then you will know who you are.
“Defeat the defeatist tendency within You” were Swami Sivananda’s words to the former president of India, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. When Dr.Kalam was a young man, he wanted to become a fighter pilot but failed the exam. Feeling dejected, he came to Rishikesh on his way home. He was sitting by the river Ganga, contemplating his future, when Swami Sivananda came walking along. He stopped and asked the young man what he was doing there. Dr. Kalam explained what had happened, and said he felt without a purpose in life.
Swami Sivananda said, “You have failed because you are not destined to excel in those areas. Your destiny is to do something else, so don’t be dejected. Defeat the defeatist tendency in your mind, and again participate in the world wholeheartedly.”
Fifty years later, Dr.Kalam still says “This sentence has Inspired me and continues to Inspire me.”
This is the essence of Spiritual life. In material existence, in outer connections, we are defeated by situations, or we feel defeated. Defeat indicates the Tamasic state. If we can defeat that tendency, then we are in a Sattwic state and we are Spiritual, because that is one of the greatest instincts to be overcome.
Therefore, a Spiritual life, not a life of contemplation, not a life of thinking airy-fairy things. It is pragmatic life in which we are aware of ourselves and what we wish to become in the course of time. The movement from Tamas to Sattwa is Spiritual Life.
~ Swami Niranjanananda
Working with planetary energies is one of the best ways to help us move beyond the limitations of time and karma. Our ignorance of planetary influences and resultant failure to adjust to them causes us a great deal of unnecessary suffering in life. We can compare this with the negative effects of not adjusting to the weather, for example, like not dressing up properly to deal with the cold of winter. No one looks at seasonal changes as a destiny that one must passively accept, but as environmental variations that require adaptation. The same is true of planetary influences. The difference is that while we can easily perceive and adjust to outer environmental changes, inner astrological forces are difficult for us to perceive and require special guidance in order to recognise them and adjust to their shifting influences. In addition, the planets wield cosmic forces that we can connect to in order to take out awareness to a higher plane of existence, if we can learn how to direct the energies with skill and wisdom.
